It would be wonderful to have a regular yoga practice when you have young children, but the reality is it isn't always possible. I truly believe that any yoga is better than nothing, and if you can fit ANY yoga into your life, then you will be richer for it! These sessions are not designed to be your only yoga or exercise, but rather DAILY MAINTENANCE in those crazy busy times. Its a space to retreat to when 10-20min is all you have. As Mums our days are filled with lists of things to do - our lives are constantly busy! This quick 10min session will stretch your body, help you tune into your breath, and allow you to find your centre before the busyness begins!
Warm Up & Sun Salute.
Ok, before you get into it, I just want to be very clear that you need to do this sequence at YOUR PACE - with YOUR BREATH. Yoga is nothing without this. This is YOUR TIME, YOUR BODY, YOUR CONNECTION BACK TO YOU. That's why having your own practice is so lovely, so delicious, as your not trying to go at the classes pace - just your own dance with your own breath & your own energy.....

Now it's time for a few 'still' poses - a few moments to reconnect with your breath & body....
Indian Sage Pose.

Sitting on your mat, extend your legs straight out in front of you.
* So that your sit bone is really connected to the ground, roll your buttock cheeks out to the side.
* Take your left hand and place it on the mat behind you
* Bend your right knee, bringing your right foot in closer to your groin, foot on the mat
* Wrap your right arm around your right knee
* Inhale, lift up through your spine so your back is nice and straight
* Exhale, twist to your left, looking over your left shoulder.
* Stay here for 5 full breaths.
* To release the pose, turn your torso back to the centre, release your arm back to the mat, and let your knee lower back to the mat.
* Now lets do the other side....
Benefits of this pose are;
* Since it requires the abdominal muscles, spine, neck, pelvis and oblique and muscles to work, this asanas help to improve posture as well as overall health.
* The twisting actions have a constricting effect on lungs which forces all the parts of the lungs to get activated and work to its full potential.
* Make sure you keep a rhythmic breathing style. Controlled breathing combined with this pose helps to rid the body of many toxins, and work towards improving overall quality of life.

* The process or 'going within' in this pose , as well as quietly being with the breath acts as a stress reliever, and helps to remove anxiety, anger & irritability.
* It reduces fatty deposits in the abdomen

Wide Knee Childs pose.
This is a delicious 'Yin' pose to sink into. Allow your body to rest in this pose for at least 6 full breaths.
* Begin in child's pose (seated with your bottom towards/on your feet), then spread your knees out wide. * Let your body fold forward. * Stretch your arms out along the mat in front of you. * Breathe. Notice your breath expanding your chest, and how your body releases on the exhale. * Stay here for 6-10 breaths - as time allows! * To come out of the pose bring your hands to your shoulders and push into your hands (like a push up). |
Savasana.
* Lying on the mat, let your feet & legs spread out and relax. * Let your arms spread out away from the body and relax. * Tuck your chin in slightly, allowing your spine to elongate along the mat. * Come to notice your breath entering your nostrils, travelling down your body, and out again. * Continue to notice your breath, the simplicity of it, and the magnificence of it. * Relax..... |
Meditation - if you have time.....
and/or, come to a seated a position, bring your hands together at your heart and chant 'Om'.
('Om' is a sacred sound, the sound of the universe. Chanting "Om" will cleanse your energetic body and set you up to start your day!)

I felt really tired when I first lay down. I felt a heaviness around my stomach, and achiness in my legs. Then I stated to feel energy moving around my heart and throat, but it felt quite congested. it moved down to my solar plexus and abdominal area, like butterflies in my stomach swirling. A warmth came over my upper thighs and lower back. Lots of buzzing in my feet, and then the energy tingling as it began to move up my legs, like a cool breeze. My legs felt really light, my whole body felt really light, but there was still the tension around my soul plexus...then a warmth moved from my solar plexus up to my throat and upper chest. It felt really strong in my throat and I had to let out a sound!
